Newly planted trees in the wild area in 2017.

From City of Toronto and Humber River Citizens Alliance:

Commemorate the lives lost to Hurricane Hazel and enhance the natural habitat. This event will feature a short talk by historian Madeleine McDowell and a ceremonial tree planting with Vivian Recollet, an Anishinaabe Grandmother Waterkeeper. Meet south of Raymore Bridge, on the east side of the Humber River Recreational Trail (by the old bridge abutment).

Cost: Free

Individuals and small groups do not need to register and are welcome to attend. Registration for groups of five or more people has reached maximum capacity and is now closed. Email us to add your group to the waitlist.

Mass planting in the park

Hundreds of saplings were planted in the park yesterday. Beginning where the river comes close to the trail and continuing to the bottom of the hill towards Scarlett, lots of willow, red hawthorn, elm, and oak have been planted. This is a good time to plant – last year, a planting was done in July and most of the saplings were dead on arrival after having endured a hot day in a plastic bag in the sun.

The field past the weir was planted and will be a veritable forest in a few years.

Today a tanker truck was watering them in thoroughly. Let’s hope for a wet spring so they can establish themselves.
